Pasadena Presbyterian Church
Global Mission Committee

Purpose

The purpose of the Global Mission Committee is to shepherd PPC’s ministry in the areas of evangelism, justice, and all aspects of mission to God’s people beyond the bounds of the church. By evangelism, we mean the intentional fulfillment of Jesus’ Great Commission, to make disciples of all people for Christ. We affirm the relevance of this Commission to our mission in Pasadena, in the San Gabriel Valley, in the United States, and across the world; we recognize that God calls us to active ministry in all of these venues. We further affirm that until there is justice for all of God’s people, the church as the Body of Christ is called to work tirelessly for the healing of injustice and the restoration of right relationships between all persons and social structures. We finally affirm that our call to ministry through mission involves more than money, requiring the engagement of our whole selves -- hearts, minds, and hands -- in mission to God’s people.

Group’s Accountabilities

The Global Mission Committee is responsible for empowering PPC and her members for ministry by:

  • Obeying the Great Commission joyfully, making Christ known to the world God loves by our positive example and joyful proclamation of the Gospel.
  • Informing the congregation so that we may grow in our knowledge of the world need and the work of Christ to meet it.
  • Teaching compassion to the church, extending the unique loving care of Jesus Christ to those in physical, emotional, and spiritual need in and beyond our own culture.
  • Equipping ourselves for ministry by fostering awareness of each person’s unique gifts for ministry, and encouraging their employment in our local community and the world beyond.
  • Mobilizing our members for ministry through active Christian service in the local, national, and international communities.
  • Proclaiming the Gospel imperatives of justice and peace, and interpreting those imperatives in the context of our community, nation, and world.

Group’s Authorities

The Global Mission Committee exercises authority over all aspects of the church’s ministry beyond the walls of the church, including:

  • Developing and overseeing implementation of a Mission Interpretation Plan which ensures that the importance of and opportunities for congregational and individual outreach are kept visibly in front of the congregation.
  • Oversight and support of the ministry of all groups and activities at PPC which labor in the community (e.g., the Board of Deacons and Presbyterian Women) with respect to their mission activities.
  • Oversight of all financial contributions made for Mission on behalf of PPC, including those made by the Board of Deacons and Presbyterian Women.
  • Reviewing and recommending to the Session for approval special offerings for outreach-related causes (e.g., One Great Hour of Sharing, the Joy Offering, Peacemaking Offerings, etc.).
  • Coordination of all opportunities for ministry outside of PPC’s walls, including both PCUSA and ecumenical relations (e.g., Alternative Christmas Market, Posada, CROP Walk, etc.).
  • Commissioning, with the advice and consent of the Session, members of PPC to serve as liaisons to or board members for community groups (e.g., ECPAC, Habitat for Humanity, Union Station, etc.).

Group’s Resources

The Global Mission Committee is staffed by the Pastor, Head of Staff, in accordance with the direction stated in the Mission Study. The committee includes at least three elders currently serving on Session, as well as other members appointed by the Session.

The Global Mission Committee is responsible for all budget line items and off-budget accounts that spend funds on ministry outside of the PPC. These will be specifically enumerated.

Organization

The Global Mission Committee plans to meet as a whole on a periodic basis. We anticipate that the primary work of the Committee will be discharged through two or more sub-groups, which include mission and social justice/peacemaking. We further envision a variety of task groups which will take responsibility for specific activities, such as the Alternative Christmas Market. Existing groups, such as the  Board of Deacons, will continue in their current configurations, subject to ongoing review of their activities relative to outreach by the Committee.
